Apocalyptica Faraway Vol. 2 Flute Cover Tabs
Hello Everyone!
I've had some requests for notes for a couple of my covers. I usually don't use sheet music when doing these covers, which makes recording them rather difficult to remember, but I think I can make a Flute Tab version for some of them. Since making these flute covers is only a hobby, I don't have time in my schedule or the software to write actual sheet music. Hopefully, these tabs will be of some help!
Apocalyptica has always been a rather significant part of my life. Their music has inspired me to take the flute outside of the classical and jazz genres and really integrate it into something I love very much! I never really cared for the style that Faraway Vol. 2 was sung which prompted me to try a flute cover version. Not only was this cover my first Apocalyptica cover, but it was also my first time filming it.
Some of the techniques I tried to pay close attention to was the vibrato. A while back, Apocalyptica posted a webisode about different stylistic techniques that are used in different regions:
This really resonated with me and I try to incorporate this into every cover, and every classical song, I do. I feel that it gives the cover a more cohesive and unified sound. Additionally, this cover was much different from most in that I had to change the tuning of my flute. I normally tune to 441 or 440 Hz (depending on the piece) but this required a much sharper intonation. If I remember correctly, I tuned to about 445-450 Hz.
As I become more accustomed to recording flute covers, I find that translating the annunciation of the vocal parts to flute articulation is crucial to giving the song life. With the slower songs like Faraway, articulation is not as noticeable so stylistically matching the voice parts requires more emphasis on phrasing. Since the flute is naturally very bright and high pitched, matching the harmonics of the voice part can help create musicality. For this piece, playing in a lower harmonic helped create a richer tone which matched the vocal style of the original better.
Feel free to ask questions or discuss flute (or any general music) technique in the comments!
